Create healthy habits in the new year with “Food for Life: Delicious & Healthy Comfort Food From My Table to Yours” by Laila Ali, a four-time undefeated boxing world champion, fitness and wellness expert, cooking enthusiast, host of OWN’s “Home Made Simple” and the daughter of global icon Muhammad Ali. This cookbook features more than 100 recipes that are pack flavor and nutritious ingredients throughout 11 sections. The book encourages the use of fresh fruits, vegetables, and herbs while being mindful of dairy and sugar intake.
Most recipes consist of items already found in the kitchen pantry or refrigerator. However, Ali includes a shopping list to get cooks prepared to use “food for life.” The easy-to-follow instructions make the creation process quick and simple. The Swap It Out and Next Level, Please! segments also add a nice touch to accommodate picky eaters or enhanced palates. Though the sidebars provide interesting information, too much material graces the pages. The 89 color images attract most of the attention. As a matter of fact, several dishes look appetizing such as the chard, cheddar and sausage breakfast casserole, the lamb and millet stuffed peppers, the Heavenly Lemon Yogurt Cake, the Clean Green Energy Bars and The Greatest-of-All-Time Burger (Muhammad’s favorite). The entire last chapter showcases gluten-free desserts providing a very sweet ending.
While in my test kitchen, I made the Simple Red Cabbage Salad. I wanted a satisfying meal that my digestive system would applaud. I assembled the salad as written. It turned out as expected – crisp, light and delicious. It paired well with a slice of leftover Cajun turkey. I plan to try it again soon by swapping the red cabbage with the green.
“Food for Life: Delicious & Healthy Comfort Food from My Table to Yours” is a recommended read for those seeking wholesome cooking options. It offers something for everyone in the family without sacrificing taste. This alone makes the cookbook worthwhile.
