For many women, turning 40 means an exciting new adventure in life is ahead and what they learned in their 30's will now be put into practice. And for others, it could be a time of self-denial that mommy and daddy's baby girl has truly come of age.
But whatever side you are one, here is the news; 40 is the new 20 and being fabulous and 40 simply opens the next chapter of your life up to new opportunities and possibilities.
For Certified Fitness Trainer Carrie Villa, it is all about becoming your "your" fitness best. With a practice in San Leandro, Calif., Villa is passionate about helping women in their 40s live their best life during a period when it matters the most.
Owner of FitBody and armed with a 1st Degree Black Belt -Tae Kwon Do, Villa works with clients on a personalized basis to help them understand their bodies and what works for them. The goal is to create a regular and comprehensive cardiovascular and weight training regime that clients will stick to.
Contrary to belief, just because one's body changes with age, doesn't mean that there is nothing that we can do to regain the body we may have had when we were younger. It may take more work, but it can be done. This is especially important during a time when awareness about obesity, hypertension, diabetes and menopause becomes front and center if it hasn't already.
Here are some tips that Villa gives to clients and anyone who is looking to take their health and fitness in their 40s to a whole new level:
- Drink plenty of water - Staying hydrated is key to helping your body function the way you want it to.
- Eat breakfast – Starting your day with a healthy breakfast is a great way to jumpstart you're your attitude and body.
- Eat smaller meals throughout the day – Eating less and more frequently is a great way to nourish your body and also build your metabolism.
- Don't deprive yourself - You don't necessarily have to eliminate your favorite foods, just eat smaller portions of them and in moderation.
- Set smaller goals – When you set big goals, you may be setting yourself up to fail. Instead, set small ones and as you achieve each one, you will eventually reach the big one you have in mind.
- Be true to yourself – This one is so important because everyone needs to know their limits and what they are capable of. If you're not a morning person, then don't push yourself to workout during this time. If you are not a runner, then another find form of physical fitness activity that you will enjoy and that also give you the results you are looking for.
Turning 40 is meant to be one of best times in a woman's life. Yes, there will be some new roads to go down, but that is what our 30s prepare us for. So as you ease on down the road, remember 40 is the new 20 and your personal fitness "best" is yet to come.
