Sexy for Summer: Recipes to Stay Fit and Trim

Welcome back to THE MIX.  As we embrace the sun and fun of the summer, everyone is always in a rush to get fit and stay trim for the season.  I can't blame them; it feels great to get outside and breathe in the fresh air, head to the beach, vacation and entertain.

In maintaining that summer sexy, a lot of it goes back to what we eat and exercising.  Knowledge of portion control and color, in moderation, the frequency of eating, and good exercise go a long way to maintaining yourself.  Here are a few eating tips that will help you stay fit and trim while you are entertaining.

Portion Control

Most people, me included, ate until our hearts were content when growing up.  I remember trips to grandmas and as long as you could eat it, she would keep fixing it.  Nowadays we have become a little wiser.  We have realized over time that we should be eating 4 to 6 ounces of protein per meal.  I also recommend a half cup of your favorite starch and cup of vegetables.  Vegetables should be rich in color.  Don't boil all the nutrients out of them.  Just a quick blanch or grilling is perfect.

In Moderation

What we mean by "in moderation" is simple.  We know that we have our indulgences, those sweet treats that we seem to crave.  Learn to eat them here and there but not every day.  By controlling the amount of indulgences we eat and most importantly keeping the portion size in mind, we make it much easier to keep that summer sexy.  For example:  Instead of the big piece of red velvet cake, perhaps do a yogurt basil parfait.

Frequency of Eating

There is no secret that a healthy metabolism is a factor in maintaining your weight.  By eating on a regular schedule you help to keep the body burning regularly.  I suggest three sensible meals a day and snacks in between them.  This means every few hours you are eating something sensible but maintaining a healthy metabolism.

By far, exercise is a huge part of maintaining a great physique.  A great way to look at weight loss from a trainer's point of view is if you are burning more than you take in you will gradually lose weight. Moderate exercise helps keep you toned, refreshed and actually helps prevent injury.  Doctors at the minimum recommend you walk at least 30 minutes a day at a moderate pace.  It's ok to break a little sweat.

The tips above are a great start to maintaining the body you want for the summer, but the question for the foodies is what can I eat????  I love to eat!  No problem.  Chef Dana has you covered with some tasty and delicious summer recipes that you can use for entertaining with friends or at home with the family for dinner.  If you think about the tips above while you are enjoying the recipes below, it will all come full circle.  It's not that you can't eat and enjoy, but rather how much and how often.  If you need a little help creating a plan for your diet, you can always consult your physician and they will help you.

I hope you enjoy these as much as I do.  Stay sexy!
