A Natural Born Wonder

by  V. Sheree Williams on June 29, 2008

From survival in the family kitchen to satisfying celebrity clientele, Chef Q For Hire has all the makings of a natural wonder.

Some chefs are made and then you have the ones like Chef Q who are born. Like so many, Chef Q started in the kitchen with mom but his was out of survival having to compete with nine other siblings for food. He quickly learned the basics that would soon set the foundation for who he is today.

Born Quentin Bennett in Gainesville, Florida, Chef Q is a self taught chef graduating from the school of hard knocks while working his way through college. It wasn't until other chefs noticed his natural skills and encouraged him to consider a career in the culinary arts that he looked at this industry seriously.

He soon worked his way up the ranks acquiring techniques that he would soon blend together to form his own. He notes working with so many people and being influenced a little here and little there which ultimately led to combining these styles with "mom's." But it was the influence of the legendary Chef Patrick Clark who Chef Q admires the most for being regarded as the first black chef and paving the way for others to follow.

With a career extending over 15 years, Chef Q has cooked at various locations around the world as well as at Universal and Paramount Studios. He also created a successful culinary program at one of the state's penitenary. His celebrity clientele entails comedian D.L. Hughley, Donnie Mc Clurkin and Bishop T.D. Jakes.

When asked about his signature dish, he quickly acknowledges his Lamb Wellington which is a twist on the infamous Beef Wellington. To this day, he has not been able to find anyone who has this rare entrée on their menu.

Like other chefs, Chef Q doesn't believe in limiting himself to one particular style and has no problems saying that he may not know how to cook something, but he will learn.
He goes on to say that every chef has a story that he/she tells through the food that is prepared. "Picasso tells his through the canvas and we tell ours on the plate."

When asked about his business model for success, Chef Q proudly states his service and interaction with customers. It is the notable service that keeps clients coming back and making referrals. "We love what we do and if you do this for money then the clients is wronged" he shares. He wrapped up by saying that he tries to produce the best product by pouring himself into each dish every time.

Chef Q's cookbook, Dining at the Master's Table with a Forward by Dr. Myles Monroe, will be available in early fall. To book Chef Q or obtain more information, call 888.870. 4788 or visit www.chefqforhire.com.
