One Mother’s Creation is a Family’s Legacy

Kenya-McRae Growing up in the South, Alabama native Kenya McRae remembers how her mother was known in the neighborhood for her Southern style cooking. She was always trying new dishes which included one of her signature sauces that would soon be the inspiration for the family owned business, McRae’s Food, which was started in 2007.

Prior to starting McRae’s Foods, like many entrepreneurs, McRae knew she wanted to be in business for herself but had no idea it would involve food. She would cook for friends while living in Virginia and call home to get the recipe for her mother’s BBQ sauce. Soon requests came in and what started as one family recipe would produce two more.

Knowing that she had something special on her hands, McRae launched Mama’s BackWoods BBQ Sauce in three delicious flavors: Original, Sweet N’Sassy and Spicy. Each sauce has a very distinctive flavor which is created from the family’s signature recipe. McRae did share that fresh ingredients are the key to making each one of them irresistible.

McRae also describes the sauces as not typical. Their versatility allows them to work perfectly as a marinade, seasoning and compliment to any cut of meat be it pork, beef or chicken. Vegetables also come alive when just a dab of the sauce is added.

Currently, McRae’s sauces are available in selected gourmet stores located in Alabama, Missississppi, Tennessee, and Louisiana as well as online. Her goal is to extend distribution and become a family household brand. Future plans also include a restaurant that will add to the McRae’s family brand.

With a relatively young business, McRae is very mindful of the road ahead and the additional steps needed to take her brand from a family recipe to an international success. Doing research, being tapped into the industry and seeking guidance from experienced professionals has contributed to McRae’s success thus far. She also that notes faith, patience and persistence have and will continue to play an important part in building the family’s legacy.

Mama’s BackWoods BBQ Sauce is currently featured in this month’s CN Essentials with a special promotional offer available for a limited time for Cuisine Noir members in the CN Marketplace beginning November 16.
