African-American Bed and Breakfast Inns Take Center Stage

by  Angela P. Moore-Thorpe on August 31, 2010

Are you an adventurous tourist, a seasoned traveler, or a romantic couple searching for a unique weekend getaway? Whether you're trying to slip away and leave the hustle and bustle behind, or just enjoy some lazy days relaxing on the ocean or frolicking around town, a cozy and quaint Bed and Breakfast (B&B) may be just what the doctor ordered.

From coast to coast, B&B's are hidden gems that serve as temporary home-away-from-home. Often nestled in communities that are rich in culture, metropolitan cities, or near popular tourists' spots, they offer an escape from the traditional hotel. African-American Bed & Breakfasts have been around a while. Many years ago blacks were prohibited from staying in hotels and had to find somewhere to stay when traveling. Blacks ended up staying in people's homes. B&B's are often family-owned and operated and offer guests the sophistication of a luxury hotel enhanced by the owner's personal touch, a full-breakfast service and an afternoon tea or a happy hour.

B&B's are also known for their beautiful ambiance, great hospitality, personally prepared, mouth watering cuisine (mainly breakfast), elegant accommodations, spas and endless pampering. "We serve the best breakfast, and our guests feel like they are staying at a luxury bed and breakfast at an affordable price. Our guests always say the breakfast is the best that they have ever had at a bed-and-breakfast," says Karcheik Sims-Alvarado, owner of Tea Cakes Bed and Breakfast in Atlanta. "Our bed and breakfast is serene. Our guests feel like it is their house. It's very inviting and the guests get a chance to enjoy the entire house. It feels like you are staying at a friend's house or relatives' house. And, our guests get to meet wonderful people from all over the world. It's more than a pretty place to lodge. It's an experience," says Sims-Alvarado.

Bed and Breakfasts are popular all over the U.S. and internationally and there are an estimated 30,000 – plus Bed and Breakfast Inns in the U.S. according to the experts at www.bedandbreakast.com. Visit their site to make reservations online, purchase gift certificates, subscribe to a free newsletter and post questions on message boards hosted by experts.

Cuisine Noir set out to find five of the finest African-American- owned Bed and Breakfasts in the U.S. that not only offer great accommodations, but also provide excellent cuisine and hospitality as well. From the ocean on Martha's Vineyard to a literary escape in the nation's capital, black owned bed-and-breakfasts are great spaces to spend time with your love ones.
