With each book from celebrity chef and food activist Bryant Terry, I fall in love with cooking. There is no intimidation in the kitchen here as he makes it really easy to try something new as well as “remix” something old.
In his latest book, “Afro-Vegan: Farm-Fresh African, Caribbean & Southern Flavors Remixed,” he takes ingredients that we all know and love and gives you something that makes you go “umm.” From the basics to some that get a little fancy, you have a book with classic recipes that will never get old.
What are our favorites? So glad you asked. How about the Strawberry-Watermelon Salad with Basil-Cayenne Syrup and serve that with the song “I’m Happy” from Osunlade who happens to be one of the baddest DJs of all time. The Citrus Salad with Arugula is the perfect light complement to begin a meal and loving the Creole-Spiced Plantain Chips when it is time to do a little munching.
One that is on a dinner menu very soon is his Savory Grits with Slow-Cooked Collard Greens. We haven’t experienced a marriage like this before and looking forward to it.
