Personally speaking, each time I watch a cornhole tournament on ESPN, I swear I am in the wrong profession. How hard can it be to toss a bean bag into a hole and potentially win thousands of dollars and travel around the world? Apparently a little more challenging than it looks.
Last month, the American Cornhole League (ACL) announced the return of SuperHole, an annual pro-am series of competitive cornhole events with celebrity-pro match-ups, will head to Milwaukee, Wisconsin during Summerfest—making it a first for the league.
Presented by Johnsonville as part of its Johnsonville Summerville activities, the yearly Big Game is a chance to bring players, celebrities and fans together around good food and fun. “Seeing celebrities try their hands at competitive cornhole is nothing but fun, and we love making sure that even if they’re not great, the sausage always is,” shared Jamie Schmelzer, senior director of strategic growth.
Joining one of this year’s celebrity teams for some pre-game fun was former NFL player, host and comedian Spice Adams. Cornhole is not a new sport for Adams, who was paired with ACL Pro Dave Morse. “It’s like nostalgia, and it’s taking me back into the locker room again and I get a chance to trash talk with Aaron Jones and Nikki Garcia and Tyler Hubbard. It’s putting me back into my whelm of things that I am used to and meeting new people. I appreciate Johnsonville for having me out,” said the Detroit, Michigan, native.
Airing on ESPN Friday, July 7, the 30-minute intense match also featured Green Bay Packer running back Aaron Jones and ACL Pro partner Yvette Irwan who definitely gave Adams and Morse a threw tosses to be worried about.
Could Spice Adams be the Next SuperHole Champion?
Since launching in 2016, the ACL has become one of the fastest-growing sports in the world, attracting broadcast deals with ESPN and CBS / CBS Sports. The league’s tagline, “Anyone can play, anyone can win,” along with its ability to be played anywhere, has the league on a fast track for success.
Along with the “SuperHole” series, the ACL hosts a variety of pro and amateur events. The ACL’s strong sponsor support includes year-long partners Johnsonville, Bush’s and AllCornhole.com, along with individual event sponsors Ultra Cornhole and Reynolds Bags.
During an interview before his big game, I asked Adams about his skills and chances of helping the team score a victory. “I gotta bring something from within. This is not like football where you can use your physicality. This is all skill.”
Adams was one of 32 celebrities paired with 32 ACL pros competing for charity, culminating in the finals alongside the ACL World Championships, which take place this August.
“We’re excited to continue building on the popularity of SuperHole, which has been a huge success in past years with fans – last year’s model of extending the excitement throughout the season was a resounding hit with our audience, both in person and with those tuning in from home,” said Stacey Moore, commissioner and founder of the American Cornhole League. “This year will feature all of the action, celebrities, and competition cornhole fans have come to know and love.”

Well, how did Adams do? Let’s just say, his cornhole days are not entirely over, he just won’t be playing in this year’s ACL World Championships, but that is okay. There is always next year.
